Casting Lead Bullets Video

In today’s video we will show the things we learned about in the previous article, “Casting Lead Bullets and Balls”. Starting out in this video, we have our melting pot on a stable flat surface in a well ventilated area. A long sleeved shirt, insulated gloves, and eye protection are worn.

As you will see in this casting lead bullets video, Lead is then put into the pot and melted. After the lead the molten lead is stirred making sure the bottom and sides of the pot are scraped with the ladle and flux is added to the lead. The flux is stirred into the lead and the impurities (dross) comes to the top. Skim the dross off of the top of the molten lead with the dipper and discard into a container.

Now the lead is ready to cast. The mold may be warmed by dipping a corner of it into the lead and then proceeding to fill the mold, or it can just be filled and warmed up that way. If it is not pre-warmed, the first bullet may not fill out perfectly, but subsequent bullets should. With the mold closed and the sprue cutter closed, dip the ladle into the molten lead and fill the mold cavities while holding the mold over the pot. holding the mold at a very slight angle so that the lead swirls at the edge of the cavity can help ensure the bullet cavity fills completely with no voids. Fill the mold until a small puddle is formed on top of the sprue plate. once the lead has solidified, hold the mold away from the pot, and over an old folded towel and knock the sprue plate over cutting the sprue from the bottom of the bullet. Open the mold and drop the bullets onto the towel. ( The bullets were actually dropped onto an glove in the video).Sometimes the mold may have to be tapped lightly to make the bullet drop. If the hot bullets are dropped from the mold onto a hard surface they may deform.

After casting the desired amount of bullets any bullets that are imperfect and all of the cut off sprues can be put back in the pot and re-melted for the next batch.

Watching this video will allow you the confidence to go ahead and cast bullets yourself. Gather up your supplies, review the safety rules and have fun casting your own bullets.

In the next article we will show lubing the bullets, which is the last step in producing a bullet that is ready to load and shoot,http://craigsoutdoorsports.com/ Casting Lead Bullets & Balls
