How to: Tie a Crackle Back Fly

Here is a video I made several years ago on how to tie a Crackle Back Fly trout pattern. This is a very effective fly pattern for catching top water trout.

  • Materials list includes.
  • Size 16 Mustad R73 hook
  • 70 denier thread
  • Grizzly hackle
  • Peacock Herl
  • Uni Stretch chartreuse

This is an easy fly pattern to learn to tie. After learning to tie a crackle back fly, you will be able to utilize the techniques learned and tie many other fly patterns.

Crackle Back flies can be tied in many different colors and different body materials as well. Different body materials could include dubbing, chenille, and any body material you choose. Just be sure and use materials that will naturally float. Some of the best colors I’ve used here in Missouri has been, Chartreuse, Bennett Blue, White, and Olive green.

I fish this on top with a dead drift by casting upstream, or at about a 45 degree angle down stream and let it swing below me in the current. Often I will make a quick strip on my line to get the fly just in the surface film of the water which will many time increase the chances of a strike.

This is one of the best dry fly patterns used here in our fishing waters in Southern Missouri. Learning to tie a crackle back fly will enable you to not only catch trout, but bluegill, bass, and any surface feeding fish will gobble them up when a hatch is occurring.

Hope you enjoy and good fishing!
